History of Brass

The JIB were one of first to adopt brass instruments with valves.

Prior to Adolphe Sax perfecting the Valved brass instrument in 1842 earlier attempts were pretty much useless.

These new inventions reached Jedburgh little more than a decade later in 1854 prior to which the people of Jedburgh had to make do with flutes, drums and bagpipes!

Abbey Brass

Cameron Mabon is bandmaster to both the JIB and Abbey Brass. A 4th Section band, Abbey Brass continue to grow in stregnth and we may see them taking on some of the more presigious functions the JIB have done in the past. Abbey Brass are the fire beneath the JIB - hot on our tails and eager for success.

Cameron Mabon left Jedforest some years ago to go to Oxford University, during which time he played for the City of Oxford Band. He also played with Fundamental Brass, and the Oxford University Wind Orchestra.

From 2000 to 2004, Cameron studied music at Edinburgh University and is now a music teacher. He returned to the band in 1999, and became Bandmaster in 2002, as well as being conductor of the Junior (now Abbey Brass Jedforest) and Training Bands. His arrangements are published by Obrasso.

The JIB are delighted to have both Alan Fernie and Cameron Mabon in the driving seats. Together they ensure the JIB and Abbey Brass maintain high standards.
