History of Brass

The JIB were one of first to adopt brass instruments with valves.

Prior to Adolphe Sax perfecting the Valved brass instrument in 1842 earlier attempts were pretty much useless.

These new inventions reached Jedburgh little more than a decade later in 1854 prior to which the people of Jedburgh had to make do with flutes, drums and bagpipes!

Competition

Competition is central to the JIB. It drives us forward provding the goal of higher musical achievement.

If you thought brass bands are all about the salvation army, hymns, marching or for pity sake 'snare drums and gazoos!'. think again !
Although the salvation army movement itself has started to modernise over recent years.

The Competition band movement has been established since the turn of the last century organized in a similar structure to football. This league is fiercely contested.
We have 4 sections with a Championship division to cap it off.
The thrill of contesting can be highly emotive as accurately portrayed in the feature film Brassed Off.

Championship {Black Dyke Mills}

1 st section

2nd section {JIB}

3rd section

4th section {Abbey Brass}

At the turn of the millenium the JIB was barely on the league table at all until musical director Alan Fernie took the band by the throat and shook us into action, comparable to any great football manager.
Today we are a very strong 2nd division band contesting for the pride of our town - Jedburgh.

We are rapidly gaining the support of the jedhart people when we travel to these league contests, often held in lavish halls throughout the country.

If you want to come and support us why not travel with the band on our bus? talk to us here.

Nothing quite like the feeling of a successful result and the celebrations that follow !

Its in our blood.
