First sounds At first I was always picking up the instrument trying to make a sound. Then you realize you have to practice lots. Start thinking of practicing as something enjoyable. Once you start to play and read music it becomes a lot easier and you start to look forward to the challenge.

Nerves I was and still am a shy person but if you're going to play brass you need the confidence to give it a go. Mistakes can only be corrected if you make a sound that can be heard. No-one can play perfectly all the time, so everyone knows how it feels.
From time to time you will make notes that are wrong and stand out. It can make you feel like you have made a fool of yourself, this is all part of learning.

Reading music You just have to get used to reading music. You will be supprised how quickly and soon you will be able to do it. It will be as natural as normal reading.

High notes Most people find high notes difficult. Its the same with everything though - You just need to keep practicing and persevering regularly. It will soon become easier.

Nice sounds When you try to make a nice sound listen closely to yourself, go to your happy place and get lost in the music. Don't think about it or try too hard. Perhaps you are better suited to another brass instrument - a change can often be for the better.

Practice time Try to fit in at least half an hour every day. Little + Often is better than lots irregularly. Make sure you warm up first with some scales, slow tunes. Lip slus are always good. Then possibly just work on a piece you happen to be playing at band.

Whats the band like ? You have to experience being in a band to fully understand what its like. You need to work hard and be dedicated, a bit like the army but here you also need to have fun !!
