The Festival |
|
The highlight of Jedburgh's cultural calendar is the Callants Festival, which takes place in July.
As with the Common Ridings of other Borders' towns, the festival commemorates past skirmishes and reaffirms border boundaries - as well as being a major social occasion! In Jedburgh, the "Callant", or leader, heads a group on horseback round the locality over a period of two weeks.

On Festival Day the Callant and companions hold a ceremony at the Capon Tree - the last surviving tree from the ancient Jed Forest - then head back into town for a commemoration at the war memorial. The following day begins with a cannon firing in the Market Place at 6am and is followed by the Borders Games.

Jedforest Pioneers |
|
The early days The JIB were one of first to adopt brass instruments with valves. Prior to Adolphe Sax perfecting the Valved brass instrument in 1842 earlier attempts were pretty much useless. These new inventions reached Jedburgh little more than a decade later in 1854 prior to which the people of Jedburgh had to make do with flutes, drums and bagpipes!
