Retrospectve Scottish Championships
Retrospective:
Not a good weekend for 3 of the Border bands with Jedforest claiming 9th and Selkirk 10th in the Second section and St Ronan's in last place in the first section. A disappointing result all round.
However, one Border band had resounding success - Peebles, who have been going from strength to strength under the direction of Alan Fernie, won the 4th section, gaining promotion back into the 3rd section and a place at the National finals later this year. Hurray ! - Well done Peebles.
Overall the standard of the Scottish 2nd section bands has improved vastly. Unfortunately the Border bands have not quite kept up with the rising standard this year.
Thankfully we are still a 2nd section band after some hard work in our final week leading up to the day.
1st Movement: was very well done, in a good style with one or two minor errors.
2nd Movement: only flawed by the ensemble issues we worked hard to conquer in our final week.
3rd Movement: This was always going to be the test for most bands and we struggled to find a common pulse - which inevitably caused a few problems.
Had we been less complacent in the weeks leading up to the contest and more focused on the day we could easily have shown what we were capable of..
Here is a recording we made some days before the contest - comparitively split free and mostly 'played together'. New World 1&2 New World 3
Quoted from 4-bars-rest
"Jedforest Instrumental suffered from too many unscheduled accidents,
Selkirk found it hard to deliver with clarity (in spite of one of the most stylish cornet players we’ve heard on this piece)"
It has to be noted that we have seen a lot of player changes throughout the band over recent years, which hasn’t helped the band’s stability. We have improved, but still need to overcome some fundamental issues that reoccur to rock our boat at contests - a lack of common rhythm, the ability to listen to other and play together and, of course, the inevitable nerves.
In conclusion... a great piece to play and our congratulations to the winning bands.
Thanks go to our MD Chris Bradley who did a great job trying to get the best out of us this year. We know we have a lot of work to do over the coming months to ensure we move up the 2nd section.
Special mentions :
To Jonathon Astles and Graeme Kinghorn, both talented cornet players who stepped in to help the Percussion Team at the last moment, otherwise we’d have had vital percussion missing from this exciting piece. Jonathon, who has never competed at this level before, showed a great attitude and worked hard in the run up to the contest. He never complained and was willing to learn from our more experienced percussion players. Well done.
To our Euphonium section. Scott Renwick, who we are delighted to have signed this year and Patrick Fraser. Scott performed some beautiful solo work and he is a great asset to our team. Patrick has also put a great amount of work into this piece and has shown willingness to work alongside and support Scott forming a great team.
Best wishes to Mark Caswel on flugal... who not only played very well for us during this test piece he also leaves us to join the navy as a submariner.
To our new addition to the Bass Section, Randy Hudson. A great man and an excellent Bass player, his friendliness has been felt throughout the band. We are delighted Randy has joined us this year. Great performance !
Training Day Scottish Championships
We are pleased to report that after a full Saturday of Rehearsals and Sectionals (involving additional specialized tutors and playback equipment) we have not peaked too early this year ! It was generally accepted that there is much that can be improved in our final week leading up to the Scottish Championships. See you there. Thanks to everyone involved in the organization of the day. Nice Pies.
New Signings For 2009
New Signings
We are delighted to Announce new signings for this year.
On BBb Bass we have Randy Hudson. With a military background Randy is providing a Huge Depth of sound and a very noticable quality of technique, completing our experienced Bass section.

On Euphonium we have Scott Renwick. An experienced euphonium player formerly of Newtongrange band. Together with our rising star Patrick we have a blossoming mid section sound once again.

On Bass Trombone the highly experienced Les Rose. Les was a Brass Tutor in the Midlothian area prior to his retirement and has taught many a talented player over the past decades. He is also a former MD of Jedforest Instrumental.

On Percussion, Jonathon Astles. A talented young Flugel player who is helping out in the percussion section for this contest.
Also On Percussion we are also very pleased to see Graham Kinghorn return... A man of many musical talents and master of many diverse instruments, from Bagpipe to Cornet. He completes our percussive team for our forthcoming performance alongside Cameron Mabon and Alan Currie.

We are delighted to welcome the new team members.
Quality Retained

2008 Started for Jedforest Band with our traditional and always well attended New Years day march around Jedburgh, stopping along the way for most welcome refreshment as we toast the new year in - in style.
2007 had a more than a sprinkling of insecurity about it which filtered throughout the band. The new year started with contrasting opinion. Some fearful of an uncertain future, others optimistic to welcome new direction, challenges and ideals.
With the suggestion of our prior MD Alan Fernie to the Jedforest Committee in Summer 2007 that we try out other conductors, we had a eye opening successful result under the baton of Cameron Mabon at the Scottish Open Shield contest late 2007. In the new year - with only a handfull of weeks to get used to another conductor "Chris Bradley" in time for the Scottish Championships we were fearful of standards dropping, some favouring the opinion that the band may not be able to achieve the same standards under the direction of any other MD. Standards did not drop as we maintained the same grading as the year before.
Later in the year we continued to maintain standards winning our 7th Consecutive section win at the prestigious Brass in the Park competition held at Newtowngrange, continuing our dominance of this national banding contest.
We may possibly see more local competition at this contest in 2009 as the event is elevated as a key Homecomming Scotland location for Lothian and the Borders, sure to attract additional entries.
       7 CONSECUTIVE SECTION TROPHY's ! 02-03-04-05-06-07-08
The Jedforest Instrumental Quartet also held onto its open ensamble shield at the SBBBA/Selkirk Slow Melody and Ensamble contest this year against excellent competition from Peebles Band.
The award has now been claimed by the Jedforest Quartet for the past 8 years consecutively.
        8 CONSECUTIVE OPEN ENSAMBLE 1st's ! 01-02-03-04-05-06-07-08
Onto the Borders Entertainment Contest !
Jedforest Instrumental played exceptionally well !
Many a shocked face from players, conductors and officials alike to see the band placed midway down the table,
Far from the dreadful performance the year before, Jedforest found the 2008 result justifiably and easily shruggable by comparison, absolutely delighted with our achievements on the day, Sentiments echoed by other conductors and the entertainment adjudicator, who was extremely impressed by the band and our impact awarding us the Entertainment award.
 J.I.B. First for Entertainment !
Our Junior band also claiming a Gold award at the Youth Championships following a great result at the Borders Entertainment Contest.

Abbey Brass - National Gold award
Additionally this year saw a complete set of student instruments purchased for our Junior band - enabling us to offer the older but serviceable instruments to our 2009 influx of new eager students.
Under the direction of Alan Currie we have built one of the strongest percussion sections possibly in Scotland, certainly within the Scottish Borders with an army of kids taking up percussion tuition able to utilize a vast array of percussive items including any one of our 3 complete drum kits,. Employing the latest technological teaching aids the drums are sounding loud and proud in Jedburgh.
2008 has proven to be experimental, transitional and a succesful year for the band seeing the J.I.B on an even keel heading into 2009.
With major bandhall improvements to acoustics and a whole new floor due for 100% refurbishment to start in the new year, it's going to be even more attractive at Jedburgh. One or two more suprises to be installed in the bandhall throughout 2009

Jed Claim Entertainment Shield
Jedburgh Clown to Claim Entertainment Shield
The Entertainmant Shield comes to Jed.
A good day was had by all at the Borders Contest with all the bands putting on a great show. A record entry of 18 bands were involved this year as the town was taken over by bandsmen and women.
The theme for the contest this year was that each band had to play a march as part of their programme and our choice was O.R.B., a march which we have had much success with in the past at contests such as Brass in the Park.
We then featured our star soprano cornet player David Lightbody in the emotive piece “on with the Motley” and as ever, David did not disappoint with his stunning version. We followed this with the hymn “Swedish Folk Song”. This was swiftly followed with Alan Fernie’s arrangement of “Be a Clown” featuring many weird and wonderful noises from our percussion section and players throughout the band to add to the entertainment.
We chose The Gael from the last of the Mohicans to close our programme. This is a rousing piece which featured the mellow sound of the band to open with the pounding percussion beneath. The horns then take over and are joined gradually by the rest of the band in a powerful crescendo to a powerful fff finish.
All in all a testing programme for the band which we feel really came together on the stage and was a good performance. However, we were not favoured by the adjudicators on the day and were placed 9th overall which was somewhat disappointing.
Every cloud has a silver lining though and we were the winners of the esteemed Entertainment prize. This award is given by a separate adjudicator who bases their decision on various criteria such as the bands choice of programme, delivery, visual effect, comedy value, etc and this year the man with the task of awarding the title was John Lamont, MSP for Roxburgh and Berwickshire.
The winners of the contest were Johnstone Band who put in a superb performance and were worthy winners on the day. Its was great to see Langholm Town Band back competing again – ones to watch. Congrats to St Ronan’s on coming 4th.
Our junior band, Abbey Brass, were also prize winners with them taking the youth section title. The adjudicator for this section was James Chamberlain. All the bands performed well, particularly worthy of a mention is Langholm junior band who put in an impressive and well controlled performance and it was disappointing they were not placed higher.
Our man of the match award for this contest is awarded to Alan Currie who is now our full time kit drummer and he gets a big thumbs up for his performance in his first senior band contest

7 WINS IN A ROW JIB Dominate B.I.T.P.
JIB prove consistency

Jedburgh Instrumental Band make even more history at one of Scotland's most cherished National brass band events.
Having been awarded the best non-contesting band award way back in 2001 Jedforest Instrumental Band have won their section each consecutive year since making us the most successful band ever since the introduction of B.I.T.P (brass in the park)
7 consecutive section wins is almost unheard of within contesting circles (especially the lower sections) and a record that will be difficult to beat, also increasingly difficult to maintain as we find ourselves surrounded with stronger competition each year. Can we make it to 10?
The band played the March O.R.B followed by the Hymn Arrangement "Swedish Folk Song" (how great thou art).
Our performance gained much credit from our adjudicator Raymond Tennant and also some well placed positive criticism which we appreciate.
Jedforest under the direction of Chris Bradley certainly appeared to find an extra gear on stage with Strong dynamics and assertive attitude throughout the band. With no sign of timid or misplaced entry (especially in quieter passages) we appear to be breaking through some barriers. Ensemble is beginning to come together as is tuning (of interest to our players) - which our adjudicator never mentioned once.
We thoroughly look forward to our next contest under the direction of Chris Bradley, the Borders Entertainment Contest.
Our Junior band Abbey Brass were awarded a Gold Award under the direction of Cameron Mabon in the 'Youth Band - Development Section' close runners up to the Excellent Cambeltown Juniors. Cameron Mabon also received recognition for his youth band compositions which have become Very popular with so many youth bands in a very short time ! We are sure this time next year our very own Cameron Mabon will become familiar on many tongues throughout the country as his excellent compositions are discovered by more bands - both youth and senior !.
Congratulations to our MD Chris Bradley and Championship section Whitburn. After conducting Jedforest to our section victory (without the aid of Scores which we lost) Chris quickly slipped into his Whitbburn jacket to lead the cornet section in a performance following us.
A Brilliant performance gaining them overall victory.
This also means that Whitburn are heading into record teritory - this title bieng the 6th win in a row they have been awarded.
Many thanks to our guest players.
Due to understandable unforeseen circumstances Our Solo horn and Bass trombone players could not make the contest at very short notice.
We congratulate our 1st Horn Player Nicola Currie who took on the Solo horn part and Alan Edmond from Whitburn band who played 1st horn for us (and of course then played for his own band immediately afterwards ! )
Bryan Johnson from lochgelly band stepped in on Bass trombone. Many Thanks.
Unfortunately our Principal Euphonium Jo Mabon has been unable to contest with us recently so we were delighted when Clive Parker agreed to help us out. Clive has been a wonderful boost for the band. As with all our guests you are most welcome back at Jedforest.
Finally .......
Man of the match
The Fraser brothers have both matured as players over the past year both playing solos at the mining museum concert, Nicola Currie also deserves credit for her Solo Horn work.... David Lightbody was lazerlike on soprano...... The Bass section were great and the Percussionists never dropped anything ;) and I was very tempted to give it to Clive......However...
David Sutherland -
is man of the match.
David has always been one of the sweetest principal players you will ever be lucky enough to hear - and he was back to his exceptional best at this years BITP.
That Spellbinding tone was once again rock solid and flawless in delivery.
Many thanks to Newtongrange for hosting the event (the most enjoyable of the calendar)
It was also great to meet up once again with our good friends Langholm Town Band (The oldest brass band/band in Scotland) with whom we have reforged links with over the summer.
Langholm have over the years helped Jedforest and it was recently illuminated that both bands have a history of friendly, social collaboration. We look forward to meeting up more regularly both musically and socially.
The bit your waiting for:-

Dave Young 1922-2008

We offer our deepest sympathy to his family and the many people Dave befriended and helped over the years.
Dave Young was our bandmaster for some years in the 1960s, when he took Jedforest into the 3rd section for the first time.
In the eyes of all of our players who had the good fortune to have learned from him - a Hero.
Having heavily influenced the development of musicianship throughout the Scottish Borders, all Brass Bands owe a huge gratitude to the life, work and musical playing of Dave Young.
He freely and openly shared a lifetime of knowledge and skill to anyone asking his advice.
A truly gifted artist
A truly exceptional teacher
A true Gentlemen

The Scottish Championships Highest Class
Jedforest musical director gains national success.
We congratulate our New MD Chris Bradley (and of course the Whitburn Band) on this seasons stunning double win at both the Scottish Open and the Scottish Championships.
As principal cornet of one of the worlds consistently highest ranked Championship section bands, Chris Bradley led the winning cornet section under the baton of the internationally acclaimed Scot, Russell Gray, into triumph in one of the UK's most fiercely contested accolades, the right to be called 'Scottish Champions'

Jedforest Band and the people of Jedburgh are also very familiar with the conductor and virtuoso cornetist Russell Gray as he guested at one of the bands recent concerts. We are also delighted to see him conduct the Scottish Champion performance.
Our supporters will also be familiar with the Eb Bass(Tuba) player Steve Sykes who most recently guested at one of our concerts. We think you may also be interested to know that he was one of two adjudicators on the day who chose the winning band based solely on musical merit.
We look forward to introducing our new Musical Director Chris Bradly at our next Concert to be held in the Jedburgh Town Hall on 24th May with the addition of yet another world class guest soloist,... a person you may already know !?!

The Scottish Championships 2nd Section Results
Jedforest came 6th this year in the Scottish Championships 2nd section. More or less the same position as last year.
Our New Musical Director Chris Bradley immediately spotted the bands potential strengths and weaknesses on his introduction to the band only 8 weeks ago. Had we had more time with Chris prior to such a major contest we are sure we could have better addressed the situation. Concerns also echoed in our adjudicators comments. We are looking forward to working more with Chris to resolve such problems in our push towards the 1st section, aware we can learn a lot more under his direction. It is with relief that the band has managed to maintain the same consistent standard after so little time with a new MD. (a big upheaval for a lower section band)
A solid start for a new chapter in the bands progression.
Patrick Fraser 2nd Euphonium

Man of the Match could quite easily be yet again our soprano player David Lightbody who excelled as always...as well as Jo Mabon who, as one of Scotlands finest Euponium players, never fails to delight with her playing. However it was Patrick Fraser who probably gained both maturity and ability this year on second euphonium. Well done Patrick. Over the past weeks Patrick has applied himself to the challenge and it must be noted that his sound and ability has flourished. It should also be noted that Patrick is not the only younger player in the band to have made huge progress this year !.... So we also want to take the opportunity to applaud all our younger members.
We were not able to use our rehearsal facility in the developing Misson Hall basement this year as reported after our Scottish Open Shield result (see below) due mainly to a central heating issue. It was hoped that the facility would aid in the refinement of ensamble and intonation issues in the leadup the the Scottish Championships.... next year perhaps !
Full results
1. Campbeltown Brass, C. Anderson, 10, 188
2. Johnstone, R. Tennant, 3, 186

10. City of Discovery Brass, B. Fraser, 2, 175

Congratulations to the overall winners Campbeltown Brass. Sure to stike fear in any 1st section band !... So good to see such a young band achieve so much..

The Scottish Championships New MD - Chris Bradley
The band wil be taking to the stage at the Scottish Championships on 8th March with a new conductor for the first time in 8 years. We've been fortunate since 1999 to have had the services of Alan Fernie as our Musical Director, who has taken us from being non-contesting to consistently near the top of the Second Section. Alan had been suggesting for some time that we needed a new face at the front, and we mutually decided at the end of last year, with regrets on both sides, to part company. The band owes a huge debt of gratitude to Alan Fernie and we hope to work with him again in the future. He was not only our MD but our friend.
 Chris Bradley
The band's new Musical Director is Chris Bradley, Principal Cornet of Whitburn Band and, until recently, MD of First Section Barrhead Band. Chris has been very conscientious about taking practices, sectionals and training days, and the band and individual players have learned a lot from him in the past two months. We are very fortunate to have Chris Bradley as our Musical Director, and look forward to repaying his dedication to us by playing well the test piece (Kenneth Downie's enjoyable and testing "Three Part Invention") in the Scottish Championships.

Delight at National competition
Jedforest were placed a very pleasing 5th at the Scottish Open Shield contest (held in Perth). The Highest ranked 2nd section band.
Again Border Bands fail to make the podium. A trend we hope will not last too long.
Playing the very difficult Rhapsody in Brass for the 3rd time in as many years we were delighted with our own performance. Rhapsody in Brass has been a challenge for the band as it is not an easy choice of test piece stretching the band to its limits. On our first performance of Rhapsody in Brass at the same competition 3 years ago we were heavily criticized for even attempting to play the piece at a lower section contest.
You could say we have taken a harder road but it has been very rewarding.
The whole band applauds the work and finishing touches in the weeks leading up to the contest by Cameron Mabon who also conducted us on the day.
The day after Cameron Mabon once again conducted our fine Junior band to a very successful result behind Loanhead Brass Roots in the youth championships. Our Junior band is consistently one of the finest in Scotland made up of enthusiastic players from the Jedburgh area. We are very proud of the talent it produces for such a small town.
Our efforts are now focused on the Scottish Regional contest early next year. We will be using a new rehearsal facility for this in the developing Misson Hall basement which we hope will offer superior feedback for our players. Our current bandhall space not satisfactory for the task as we grow in ability- proven by recent events.

Dissapointment at local competition
Jedforest were placed a very dissapointing 9th at the entertainment contest (held in innerlethen).
We expected stiff competition this year and that is exactly what we got.
We were defending our title for musical quality which is completely different to the entertainment shield.
Unfortunately the main title was not retained by a border band this year.
This poor result is of course a wakeup call for the Jedforest band. A major reorganization has been discussed since spring 2007 to address our complacent rehearsals, we are obviously NOT on top form at the moment and the only way to improve is to realize our weaknesses and address them with hard work.
It has took this poor result to bring about the positive action under discussion for so many months now.

The Border Battalion
Local bands battle.
Local bands Jedforest, Selkirk and St.Ronans (innerlethen) enter the competition spirit.
Jedforest are in fighting form for the forthcoming Borders entertainment contest (held in innerlethen) and Scottish Shield contests (held in Perth) over the comming months.
We expect stiff competition this year from strong 1st section entries in the Borders entertainment contest and look forward to the challenge of the Scottish shield competition held in Perth where once again we are compeating against local competition. A great sign of the progression of border bands and tallent.
This year we are defending our title.
Last year we gained the highest marks for our technical and musical ability. There is also of course a trophy for 'entertainment' as there is also a trophy for 'deportment' ......(how smart you look).
We always aim for musical quality.
looking forward to defening our title...... 'The JIB'.

Festival Review

Jedforest staged a most memorable concert as part of the Borders Festival of Brass in conjunction with our home grown stars Abbey Brass.
Our guest Soloist Steve Sykes delighting the audience with a fine display of higher level techniques such as multiphonics and circular breathing playing with the accompaniment of the JIB. A hugely likable man the town of Jedburgh were honored, entertained and charmed by Steves charisma.
Abbey Brass displayed our up and coming soloists with the accompaniment of the JIB's highly tallented bandmaster Cameron Mabon on piano whilst collectively we are once again proud to say our youth band is in extremely good form.
It is wonderful that the Borders Festival of Brass can attract top names such as Steve Sykes with other bands in the area also staging popular concerts featuring guest soloists of equal stature.Jedforest players also guested with the St.Boswells band during the festival. The St.Boswells band respected for its spirit and determination, A band with a fine history and traditional community values.Of course the festival also provided expert workshops for all up and coming brass players which are reported to have once again being a huge success.
We would once again like to thank Steve Sykes for all the good work he has done throughout the Borderlands during his visit.

Horn Power

Our Horn section has grown in power over recent months. We would like to congratulate the section for their recent good form and teamwork.
2nd horn player Adrienne Smith is especially worthy of congratulations as she has more than risen to the challenge of our increasingly complex repertoire. Adrienne has certainly surpased our expectations as a player who only started brass tuition 4 years ago ! We were pleased to see Nicola Currie (former solo horn) rejoin the horn section with the amazing Hamish McRichie taking on the Solo Horn responsibilities. Hamish returned to the world of Brass having spent his early days within the Championship section. This year has seen Hamish perform some amazing technical solo work with the band.Well done team !

6 wins in a row !

Border Bands Advance !6X Brass in the park titles
The JIB make it 6 wins in 6 consecutive years at one of Scotlands most popular annual brass band events. Brass in the Park.
Although we may have scared away some opposition ? being the only 2nd section band entered we were assured the 2nd section trophy. However our good form was recognized as we managed to beat 1st section band Bathgate to place 4th overall behind the 3 championship section entrants.
A stepping stone to 7 in a row ?

More about Steve Sykes
His musical roots are firmly based in Yorkshire brass bands beginning with Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. In 1978 he accepted an invitation by Elgar Howarth to join the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band as Principal Tuba and Soloist. With Grimethorpe he performed as soloist throughout Europe and Australia. During this period Steve was awarded the prestigious title of Granada Television Soloist of the Year.
Because of an ever-increasing demand for Steves talent both as soloist, conductor and clinician, he now works as a freelance musician appearing in the USA, Canada, Europe and Scandinavia and is a firm favourite with players and audiences alike.
Many compositions for solo tuba and orchestra/band have been inspired by, dedicated to and premiered by him, including major works by Ellerby, Golland and Brand. One of the busiest soloists in the U.K, forthcoming engagements will see him performing in Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada and, of course, Europe.
Steve has been directing Championship section bands since the age of 22 -among his professional conducting appointments have been famous ensembles such as
CWS (Co-op) (Glasgow) and SunLife (Stanshawe). He has directed bands at the National Finals, British Open, All England Masters and European Championships and, of course, has many commercial recordings and national radio broadcasts to his name.
Steve works with many bands throughout the year, these include BAYV (Cory), Leyland, Fairey, Tredegar, BTM etc.
He regularly appears as an adjudicator at leading music festivals throughout Britain, North America, Norway and Switzerland. As a measure of his standing in the brass band movement he was recently invited to adjudicate at the National Brass Band Finals in Londons Royal Albert Hall and in March 2001 Steve adjudicated at the Yorkshire Regional Championships - regarded by many has the hottest seat in brass band adjudication! Steve is included in the British Federation of Bands list of approved adjudicators.
