The end of a perfect year !

Our annual Christmas concert was especially jolly this year rounding off a highly successful 12 months for the JIB.
Marking the launch of our latest CD 'Jings' the evening was a record breaking fund raising event drawing our greatest ever audience.

It has also been a delicate year for the JIB where we have gone back to the roots of our music excavating subtleties lost. Perfectly illustrated by Principal Cornet David Sutherland and his flawless performance of the Cameron Mabon arrangement 'Edge of the Moon' Simply put and without exaggeration 'Stunning' Another example this year, our world class Soprano player David Lightbody and his superb dynamic control rendering a mature and emotive performance of 'Flowerdale' on the 'Jings' CD. Without doubt the finest soprano player in the borders.
The whole band has started to work as a unit in a less mechanical more musical way and we are a much stronger team for our efforts. Having said that the JIB is bursting with soloist tallent keen to perform whenever possible. This year saw the rise of cornet player Emma Douglas Crowned Champion Soloist among the young players of the Borders one of many young JIB players the band is proud to have encouraged over recent years. Move over rover, let Emma take over.

It can be difficult for Brass Bands to draw an audience at all at this time of year as it is also a season to entertain the young ones with various pantomimes and school events. In Jedburgh we are fortunate to have a very loyal fan base who always enjoy our music and this year delighted by the bands good news
(we won a competition)

As for the New Years Day march roound the toon !?#?! we've can't recollect much about it .... must have been a 'Hoot' !

The new year will also see some player reorganization which could fortify the JIB's new found musicality to elevated heights.

There were too many 'high notes' in 2006 to summarize however our archive of recent achievement will always be there to peruse. Many thanks to all our supporters. All the best for the new year and enjoy 'Jings' !

Soloists from the JIB took part in a fund raising event at Denholm village hall in aid of a new primary school.
Denholm primary school was sadly burned to the ground leaving the children without a building.
JIB band member Stuart Black orchestrated a musical evening which featured a wide range of instrument types and genera including the Border Ceilidh Band. One of the highlights a performance of 'The Pheonix Song' by the Denholm primary children.

The JIB's input ranged from popular quartet numbers to classical and Improvised Jazz solo's accompanied by the JIB's own Cameron Mabon..

The Concert raised the sum of £320.

We were delighted to have took part in a wonderful musical evening to help such a deserving local cause.

Borders Entertainment contest

The Scottish Borders Brass Band Association event was hosted this year by Selkirk Silver Band in Selkirk high school.
Each band played a twenty-minute concert programme with adjudicators Nigel Boddice and Bruce Fraser judging the musical and technical performances.
Meanwhile, Alan McLaren, former President of the Scottish Brass Band Association was invited to assess bands for their entertainment value.

As predicted strong performances from our neighboring bands ensured a healthy competition highlighting the quality within the Scottish Borders Brass Band movement.

This year we did not retain the entertainment prize (Queen’s Head pub Shield) picked up by the ever inventive and colorful St. Ronans band from Innerleithen who not only reclaimed the award for a 4th year but were also awarded a respectable 3rd place overall. However we were obviously delighted to have reclaimed the overall title of Border Champions !!! and the Scottish Borders Trophy by gaining the highest marks for musical merit, previously held by Barrhead Burgh Band. We were awarded 1st place by 5 clear marks above the 2nd placed band McTaggart Scott.

Our Junior band Abbey Brass put on a performance to be proud of, once again showing the audience that they deserve to be in the 4th section.
Abbey Brass were going for the entertainment prize big time (Queen’s Head pub Shield) with a fully operational darlek onstage in an attempt to 'exterminate' the competition. ;) Already the members of Abbey brass are determined to grow in strength and no doubt hieght! for next years contest.

We also applaud our Percussion section (Allie Young, Alan Currie and Cameron Mabon) who were awarded best percussion section on the day.

It was a good day for Jedforest

The band are unanimous and delighted to award our 'man of the match' as BB Bass player Brenda Fernie.

Brenda Fernie BB Bass

Brenda played as a guest for McTaggart Scott immediately before us, helping them to achieve the best bass section award prior to ensuring Jedforest maintained the solid foundation demanded for our winning programme.
We were quite concerned for Brenda when we realized that she would have to play a competition set twice in succession. Our concern was for Brenda's health as we knew she would give both bands 100% commitment which is now obvious to everyone.
Unfortunately we were too late to arrange a swap with our junior band after the draw was announced, However, when we found out that Brenda was OK with the decision to adhere to the original draw the band were given an added incentive to perform well.
Brenda's achievement is more than worthy of our whole hearted admiration, raising the standard of our bass section and the moral of all the band.

Radio Scotland & The JIB

Following a feature in the Sunday Times in which Abbey Brass (Jedforest Instrumentals junior band) were highlighted as one of the most exciting youth bands in the country Radio Scotland requested an inrterview.

Tom Allen, reporter for the arts and culture program 'Radio Cafe' recorded both Junior and Senior bands before interviewing condutors M.D. Alan Fernie and Cameron Mabon both of which are responsible for dynamic compositions which have helped to make the JIB the fresh and modern organization it is today.

Tune in Now !

Borders Slow Melody competition

A Grand Day Out for Jedforest

Jedforest gained far more than a strong showing in all sections of the Borders Slow Melody competition in Selkirk, its players taking 1st place in every section, as well as gaining most of the other podium places. The 1st placed Jedforest prizewinners were:-

Ben Jacob (Under 10’s)
Katy Sutherland (Under 12’s)
Amy Sutherland (Under 14’s)
Emma Douglas (Under 18s)
David Sutherland (Open)
Open quartet (David Sutherland, John Kirk, Hamish McRitchie, Jo Stark)

Sutherland Hat Trick !

Principal cornet player David Sutherland was placed under immense pressure as the junior results were awarded at mid-day. Both his daughters, Katy and Amy Sutherland each received 1st place in their category. (under 12's and under 14's respectively). Playing a new slow melody arranged by up and coming composer and Jedforest Instrumental conductor Cameron Mabon, David successfully retained his slow melody shield in the Open section for a second consecutive year, thus completing a family hat trick on the day !

David was also part of the Jedforest quartet, who for a second year in a row gained the highest praise  from a delighted adjudicator, retaining the Open Quartet title yet again.  The other 3 members of the quartet featured in 3rd to 5th places consecutively behind each other in the Open section.

The Slow Melody competition ended a week of events held as part of the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association (SBBBA) 'Borders Festival Of Brass' which is now in its 8th year. Jedforest Instrumental, and its ‘junior’ band Abbey Brass Jedforest, and featuring Graham Fraser (the Scottish Solo Champion) on Eb Bass, put on a concert the night before to a packed Jedburgh Town Hall.

Brass in the park

Jedforest Successful

5th consecutive win !

This years Brass in the park competition was unfortunately plagued with poor weather, however everyone still seemed to enjoy this excellent event which was well represented by the Scottish Borders bands.

The JIB were blessed with a good draw grouped together with (what we consided to be) some of the strongest bands entered. This offered us the opportunity to be compared side by side.

As the heavens opened and rain struck canvas the JIB under the baton of Alan Fernie opened with a fiery performance of the vintage march "O.R.B."
Principal cornet David Sutherland leading in regimented manner through the many complex movements of this challenging piece.

Our hymn choice was a new score written by Alan Fernie titled "Our Treasure" . A sweeping dynamic soundscape almost cinematic but presented with the unique descriptive tonal simplicity of a Fernie composition.

Finally our soloist choice was "The Blaydon Races" variations performed by our Principal Euphonium Jo Stark. Always a crowd pleaser and a fine finish to our performance.

We were awarded the prize for the highest placed 2nd section band which is the 5th year in a row we have claimed a highest section award.
Overall we ranked 3rd place behind 1st section bands, the overall winner 'Dalmellington' recently promoted to championship section.

Our junior band "Abbey Brass" did very well placed 2nd in the 4th section and climbing the results ladder.
A notable performance of Cameron Mabons "She's the One" by Patrick Fraser on Euphonium expressing his maturing tone.

Not quite the washout some had predicted, and we once again thank Newtongrange Town and Band for staging this wonderful event.

Special congratulations go out to Campbeltown Brass a very young 3rd section band who claimed 4th overall.
